I always try to maintain the 2-minute silence on Remembrance Day (November 11th) rather than on the Sunday nearest it. Thing is, I’m in France and I have a question if anyone can answer it – should the silence be at 11:00 GMT (midday here) or at 11:00 local time?

Some interesting browsing through Wikipedia informs me that the armistice document was agreed at 5am on the 11th November, 1911 – to come into effect at 11am Paris time. However, this is further clarified as being GMT. Which begs a further question – was Paris using GMT back in the early 20th century rather than European time (1 hour ahead)?

See, this is why I love the internet. There’s just so much information out there. Spending a half hour browsing through Answers.com and Wikipedia can make you realise how much more stuff there is to know about.

But anyway – 11:00 local time on Tuesday? Or midday so I’m the same as back home? Or, really, does it not make any difference. After all, it’s the thought that counts.

Just a short post today. It’s the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. We had an election recently – you may have noticed – and perhaps understandably a large number of people are groaning about the result. Forget all that today. Were it not for the thousands of people who gave their lives between 1939 and 1945 to win this war, we wouldn’t have had that election.

Instead, please – take a minute today and remember them.
