Turns out, or I think anyway, that I have a leak behind the toilet which is a bad thing. When the cistern’s full, there’s a near constant “taptaptaptap” sound. The upside? I figured out how the odd ballcock-substitute system works so I can stop it refilling while not having to turn the stopcock off all the time. Yes, those are nail clippers jammed into the workings. Yank them out, it fills and I can immediately flush then pop them back in again.
