Never met him, wish I had, never will.
I just returned from a week on the Gili Islands with next to no interet access. I fired up NUFC.com as I do when I check the web for the first time each day and the sad headline faced me – Sir Bobby Robson R.I.P.
At 76 there’s no denying he had a good innings, especially given the numerous fights he had against cancer. I still think the way he was offloaded by Newcastle United was horrendous, yet I don’t recall him making any bitter comments in the press. He did as well for us as anyone could have hoped at the time, and he got England as far as anyone has since the 1966 World Cup.
I’d honestly be amazed if anyone had a bad thing to say about the man.
As I said, I didn’t know him. But I’m still going to miss him. The world needs more nice people and it’s lost an amazingly nice one with this sad passing.
[His legacy lives on, however. Please consider a donation to the incredibly worthwhile Sir Bobby Robson Foundation]

I’m still so, so sad about this.
The world needs more like him.
I watched a couple of matches from the Emirates Cup on TV the other night (only footie I could find to watch here) and there was a lovely tribute to him before kickoff, followed by a huge applause.
There aren’t too many people in the footballing world who’s deaths will sadden so many people. Somehow if Joey Barton got hit by a bus tomorrow I don’t think there’d be too many black armbands on show.
Yep. I’ve not even heard a single Sunderland fan make any comment. I like the fact they had a minute’s applause over the weekend matches, rather than silence.
I’m curious to see what happens at the match on Saturday against West Brom, one of the clubs he played for. I have no idea if I’ll be able to see it in Bangkok though as it’s on BBC1 at home and not Sky.
went to the ground today (first time i’ve ever been in!) will put some pics on my flickr photostream later if you’re interested – and blog about it too. there were loads of different shirts and scarves there.
it was lovely.
I’d definitely be interested in the pics, Beth. I’ll check your blog later on. Should have a lot of spare time this week to catch up on such things.
