Go for it!

Index finger
I'm talking to you!

I’ve done a lot of stuff over the last three years that I never imagined I would. For the full story, check out my Travel Blog. I never, even a little over four years ago, would have guessed I would have done what I have done, achieved what I have achieved, experienced what I have experienced. Sometimes things just happen than give you a nudge in the right direction.

In short, for those new here, I met a lovely young lady who had already arranged to go travelling for 18 months. I was living in a nice house next door to the world’s worst neighbour who was – no exaggeration – driving me insane. Seriously over the edge. I’d bought my house when it was cheap and it had doubled in value. My job, for a great company and with wonderful co-workers, was pretty dull.

In short, I had a lot of reasons to go. A woman to follow, a neighbour to escape from and the funds to do so.

I’m no longer with that woman. In fact, I’m no longer with the next one either! I am, however, the owner of two passports (one full, one getting there), a PADI Divemaster card, and a collection of photos and stories that are simply staggering to me.

This isn’t a post to show off. This is a post to make you sit up and think “I should do that” if you’re at all able. And the reason for this is a story I heard today. It’s a sad one and very true.

To maintain confidentiality I shall use “a friend of mine” as the source. She is a schoolteacher and one of the children she taught last year is nine years old. He has a five year old sister. Last weekend they were sorting out a new hamster cage in preparation for getting the animal itself.

Their mum felt a little weird, and a headache was developing so she went for a lie down. Shortly after she called for her husband – the pain was getting far worse so they called for an ambulance.

By the time she made it to hospital she was brain dead.

Within two days, the machinery keeping her alive had been switched off.

She was 37.

Thirty. Seven.

And with no medical history that pointed to the fact that this might happen.

By all accounts she was very well liked and a wonderful mother to her two children. At least she had the time to bring them both into the world. She achieved something.

I sometimes wonder “what if” I’d not sold up and left. I’d still have a house and (possibly) a steady job. I’d likely own an X-Box360 and a pool table and have a home cinema. But I’d have missed out on the biggest adventure I could ever have hope to have. Walking across Europe, sky-diving, working in a temple in Thailand with baby tigers for crying out loud.

Then I hear about someone like this being taken at such an early age – barely a year older than I am now – and all my regrets vanish.

You only live once. If you’re lucky you’ll get maybe 70-80 years on this planet. If you’re less fortunate, maybe half that. Or less.

Don’t think “I wish…”.

Do it!

For me, it was seeing foreign countries and really pushing my independence. For you, maybe it’s a course in French or spending more time with your children.

Whatever it is – you can do it. It’s too easy to focus on material stuff these days: the flat screen telly, the bigger house, the flasher car. You don’t need them. Penny-pinch, save up, change arrangements, get rid of things you don’t use. You’ll be surprised how much you can make.

And go for it.

You only have one chance. It’s a huge, wonderful world. Don’t regret never giving yourself the opportunity.

You never know when your time is up.

Lock up your sons and daughters!

Carry On Teacher
Carry On Teacher

OK, in a rare “about me” post, and a break from the deluge of film reviews to come: hear this!

I am going to be a teacher.

Scared yet? Let me get specific. I’ve managed to wangle my way onto a course in Secondary Education with Computing at Strathclyde University, hopefully resulting in a PGDE. I applied late and went for interview a couple of months ago. I didn’t make the grade for the highly-contested last two places, but I was persistent. When I got back to the UK this week, I contacted them again and asked if there had been any drop-outs or no-shows.

I guess there was.

Today I got a call asking me if I could start on Monday. This will be two full weeks into the educational calendar so I’ll have a lot to catch up on. At present my biggest concern is finding somewhere to live. The commute from Perth, where I’m staying with the folks, isn’t too long of a day but it’s far too expensive in the long term. Chances are I’ll end up staying with family for a couple of weeks.

The nature of the course (few weeks at uni, few weeks at a school, repeat) means that I won’t necessarily be based around Glasgow for the entire duration of the course. Not helpful when trying to organise a rental agreement. I guess I’ll find out!

However, what I can say is that I’m really looking forward to it. OK, so it knocks my travelling on the head for a while but perhaps that’s a good thing. Given that I should get the course for nothing having been “resident” in Scotland for over three years, and that I can get a full student loan to top up my dwindling savings I could even come out of it a little better off than I went in.

It’s a new challenge and something I’m really excited about doing. Career prospects aren’t too bad at the end, either – I’ll still have all my IT history as well as a new qualification. I may even go on to do a PGDE in Primary Education at some point and cover all the bases. See how this one goes first, though.

So expect a few posts about the course, being a mature student, life in Glasgow and more film reviews as the next few months progress. Don’t worry, I will update the travel blog from time to time and I intend to go abroad during the holidays as long as I can afford it.

Now, how many laptops do I need to take with me?

KKK-westion

The KKK: Nazi salute and Holocaust denial
A racist with a small penis wearing a bedsheet

Dear Grand Wizard

For no real reason (although probably related to alcohol intake). discussion turned last night to “why do the KKK really hate Jews and coloured people?”. Seriously, I don’t get it. They claim to be Christian of some type or other and yet Jesus was Jewish. Chances are, he was also Arabic or some other “coloured” race that the KKK despise.

As for the blacks (sorry, for those who keep a list of whatever’s classed as politically correct at any moment in time – I’m going to say “black people” and don’t care if you think I’m racist because of it. I know I’m not and that’s all that counts) is it just a matter of fear or jealousy?

Look at the likes of Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson. Guess their ages, then look them up online. Both guys have aged spectacularly well – and this is common in black (and indeed Asian) people compared to whites. I’m jealous of that.

Then there’s the fact that people of African descent have a great tendency towards athleticism. Look at the amazing football players and runners who are black. Hell, the guy who really embarrassed Hitler that Berlin Olympics all those years ago was black. Jesse Owens is one famous person from history I would love to meet and shake the hand of as he categorically proved that being tall, white and blonde doesn’t make you superior.

We could point towards the stereotype that black guys are somewhat better endowed in the trouser department, but I’d rather flip this around and go for the assumption that any of the bedsheet wearing freaks in Louisiana just have small penises and need something to take their futility out on. After all, black people don’t tend to marry their own sisters either.

And when was the last time a white supremacist released a classic album or was highly regarded for their musical skills? Check out the huge list of black artists from Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Michael Jackson (in the earlier days), Bob Marley

If a coloured person or organisation want to make a point they usually do it in public, pre-arranged and without their faces hidden behind something they ejaculated on at 7am the same morning. Sure there were riots many years back, but thankfully this is (to a large extent) a thing of the past. Given the climate in which many of these rallies were held, this shows that blacks – certainly at that time – were a hell of a lot braver than the cousin-shagging hillbillies with six toes on each foot.

Seriously, I just don’t understand what the KKK (and the BNP) have against coloured people. Unless they’re jealous. Or scared. After all, these seem to be the main reasons for starting wars and targetting people or peoples: you’re frightened of them or they have something you want.

If you want to see if taking action based on these emotions is worthwhile, ask some people who’ve done it. Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, George W Bush. Hardly a historical popularity list.

Sir Bobby Robson – a perfect gent

Wise Counsel. A Man of real Talent, Class and ...
Bobby - R.I.P.

Never met him, wish I had, never will.

I just returned from a week on the Gili Islands with next to no interet access. I fired up NUFC.com as I do when I check the web for the first time each day and the sad headline faced me – Sir Bobby Robson R.I.P.

At 76 there’s no denying he had a good innings, especially given the numerous fights he had against cancer. I still think the way he was offloaded by Newcastle United was horrendous, yet I don’t recall him making any bitter comments in the press. He did as well for us as anyone could have hoped at the time, and he got England as far as anyone has since the 1966 World Cup.

I’d honestly be amazed if anyone had a bad thing to say about the man.

As I said, I didn’t know him. But I’m still going to miss him. The world needs more nice people and it’s lost an amazingly nice one with this sad passing.

[His legacy lives on, however. Please consider a donation to the incredibly worthwhile Sir Bobby Robson Foundation]

Dear passenger…

Gesture raised fist with middle finger lifted
You wanktard

Were you the individual who left your bag in the ladies’ toilet at Edinburgh Airport yesterday? The one who sparked the security alert which caused a 4-hour delay to Leah’s flight (not to mention other changes and cancellations), which made he rmiss her connecting flight to Singapore from Heathrow and onward flight to Kuala Lumpur? Which means – assuming she makes the new connections – will have her arriving over four hours late, close to midnight and with no luggage for two days?

If so, I hate your guts. I hope beyond hope that the bag contained enough material to identify you and have you crucified. At the very least I hope all of your travel documents, passport, money, house keys and the like were inside and it was blown up in a controlled explosion and it costs you a fortune to replace it all.

You stupid, bloody idiot.
