I am a jinx

Tamworth FC

So I start following Gateshead FC… and they lose a large leading margin at the top of the Blue Square North, allowing Tamworth to clinch automatic promotion. Gateshead will now find themselves in the playoffs at the end of the season. Congratulations to Tamworth, though.

Let’s not even go near the subject of Newcastle United‘s run-in for the end of the Premiership season. I really, really hope I’m wrong but deep down I just know we’re ******.

Dammit. I’m not having a good month.

This Shearer thing

Newcastle United F.C.
Newcastle United F.C.

Thanks to Damo and Weenie for pointing this story out. Yes, I missed it. Because when the news broke I was on a 2850km campervan trip through the Australian Outback where I couldn’t even get an AM radio signal let alone an internet connection. Even if I had, their definition of “football” here is one of three games where you use your ******* hands instead of your feet so I doubt it would have made the news.

So. Alan Shearer. Newcastle United manager. Good news or no?

Well, it’s good to know we’ve got someone who gives a **** in the position and who’s not in a hospital bed. My best wishes still go out to Joe Kinnear, but who knows if he’ll be back in the hotseat next season? My issue is that Shearer has maintained for ages that he’s not ready for the position. What changed his mind?

Is it desperation on the part of the club and even Shearer himself? How can he suddenly be ready to do the job now when he wasn’t only a few months ago? So many questions.

Of course, he’s a figurehead and if anyone could rally the fans it’s the big man himself. I also believe that he’s got that pipsqueak Ashley over a barrel as the only individual who could really set his own terms as manager.

One bit of news that’s been buried ever so slightly by the headline above is that Dennis Wise has gone. Thank ****. Good bloody riddance to the evil little ****. And I fully believe this was a condition of Shearer taking the job.

What’s important to note, though, is we only have 8 games left. We’re third bottom. Even the mackems are above us. Shearer’s work is cut out (as fourth manager this season) to stop us going down with the Boro.

Here’s hoping this isn’t just a huge publicity stunt on the part of Ashley. I doubt it, purely as Shearer’s involved and there’s no denying his main focus will be on maintaining Premiership status for the sake of the team and the fans – not some arsehole Cockney’s bank balance.

Confused

Wigan Athletic crest

Has someone introduced new rules into football regarding tackles and the validity of playing the ball? I ask as I thought it was just us being the victims of bad refereeing recently, but after watching the sending-off of Wigan‘s Emmerson Boyce against Newcastle at the weekend I’m questioning that.

The drop to 10 men kind of helped us – we’d been somewhat flat beforehand – but no way should Wigan have had a man sent off. It’s probably no consolation, but look at what happened to Habib Beye the other week, and Coloccini’s yellow against Fulham was a work of fiction as well.

Two great goals in the game, though – Wigan’s first and Martins’ for us. Both pearlers. Still, at home against Wigan, one point still isn’t enough. JFK is doing OK for us, but we still need more. I’m for giving the guy a bit of leeway and, unless we’re going to get Keegan back as the result of a takeover, I’d say we should stick with him. If nothing else, he deserves it for having the balls to give the job a go when nobody else would take it.

Next up – Chelsea away. Oh, bugger.

Bloody Rangers

Rangers F.C.

Normally I don’t give a crap about the Scottish Premier League. I mean, it’s just the same as the English Premier League, but exactly half the size – even down to having a Big Two instead of a Big Four. But right now it’s pissing me off.

One of the two most important games in the footbal calendar is on tomorrow with a 12:45 kickoff – the forces of filth and darkness v Newcastle United. It’s on Sky Sports 1, as it always is when the mackem scum actually surface into the Premiership for a brief period. Therefore every pub up and down the land should be showing it.

Only up here, they’re not. Because ******* Glasgow Rangers are playing ******* Hamilton Academicals at 12(*******)30.

This is the equivalent of Liverpool v Everton being ignored in favour of Manchester United vs Spurs. A foregone conclusion, no real history, a nothing match. Of no real consequence except to those directly involved. And for half of them it’s how much their goal difference will improve while the rest are worried about damage limitation.

Thankfully I’ve managed to find out that my auntie’s husband’s brother’s son has Sky and I’ve been told I can pop over there to watch it. It’s screwed around something rotten with my timetable for the weekend, but it’s one game I can’t miss.

Bloody SPL. It’s not like anyone really gives a **** about Third World Football anyway.
