Just got in from the pub where we watched Venus Williams get soundly beaten by a small Chinese woman. I’m not one to watch tennis, but anything involving fit women in short skirts is bound to catch my attention. Especially after a few beers.
Part of me wonders where all these Chinese athletes have come from. When was the last time a Chinese player did will at Wimbledon? Yet this woman – frankly – thrashed the statuesque Venus and walked into the semis.
I think it’s down to motivation. Venus loses some pride and marketability (no cash prizes for the Olympics). The Chinese girl loses her youngest brother if she fails to qualify. Her mum’s head’s on a block if she gets to the final.
Talk about pressure.

I love it when small chinese women win against all odds – no prizes as to why! π
Actually, a Chinese woman did do well in this year’s Wimbledon – Zheng Jie beat the world No 1, ended up making it to the quarter finals, which should have been a bit of a warning as to how Chinese tennis has progressed.
Thought you’d be rivetted to the women’s beach volleyball… π
I watch sport for similar reasons to you – fit young men in tight shorts…lol!
I confess to knowing very little about tennis other than that there are a lot of very attractive tennis players. Especially the Williams sisters. And most Russians. And the woman who ended up co-hosting Treasure Hunt on Channel 4.
I’m in a Muslim country at the moment. I think they’ve banned beach volleyball. I know Saudi wanted to change the outfits they were allowed to wear, but I can’t see a burka working too well in the sand.
And I don’t watch sports to leer at the fit young men. Not any more.
