One for the sad physics geeks

BBC News are announcing that it’s likely that Europe will be hosting the $10billion fusion reactor at the core of the Iter project. OK, all well and good, but 5 house points for the first person to spot problem with the following quote from the article:

“In a fusion reaction, energy is produced when light atoms – the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium – are fused together to form heavier atoms. “

Can we blame the BBC for this? Some lazy lackey mis-typing up an article?

Or do they not realise that both actually are already on the ‘heavy’ side of things!?

Do I win £5?

Mosh

It’s only 5 house points (this isn’t Viz) and that’s not the point I’m looking for…

The sentence says that energy is “produced” i.e. created. Energy is *never* created. It’s converted from one form to another. Fundamental law of the universe. All the energy that’ll ever exist already does.

See what my license fee buys me? Bloody inaccurate reporting, that’s what. *tut*
