**** this. I’m moving

Scotland will be no-smoking in “enclosed public spaces” by Spring of 2006.

So, not only can I get pissed in a pub any time of the day, any day of the week… I can do it while only damaging my liver and not my lungs courtesy of all the selfish, nicotine-addicted *******. Add to that the fact that I can wander over to Asda any time of the day or night – again, on any day of the week – and a shift north is looking very enticing.

Unless England follow suit? Mind, we’re still in the dark ages on all three fronts. How shameful that the country in the UK which houses the major seat of political power for the entire of the British Isles isn’t the one leading the way.

The tobacco companies as usual are crying that only 50% of people want a total ban. Well, the poll on this page doesn’t agree (73% of over 10,000 votes when I looked). Thing is, one poll will be fudged one way, one another and so on.

Publicans as well are whimpering about it destroying their businesses. I have no figures, but has this happened in Ireland or New York? Surely that’s a simple way to get an idea.

Well done Scotland. What are your house prices and IT employment opportunities like up there?

25 mins from Glasgow… Asda… Hamilton, by any chance? I used to live in Stra’ven, though only for 2 years. Hated it. Mind you, I was 12 and it had absolutely *nothing* for me to do.

Well.

Aside from steal porn from the John Menzies.

Gail

Aye, its no’ bad up here.
I stay 25 minutes drive from Glasgow, near a 24hour Asda (heh heh) and the average house price in my village is £60 000. The town nearest us (5mins) has an average house price of £100 000. Think theres a lot of IT work in Glasgow/Edinburgh.
We would make the space for a superstar blogger, obviously.
Sharons right though, it is better up here! 🙂

Gail

Christ no, not Hamilton! No, much more leafy and countryside than that, I stay in Tarbolton, a tiny village just outside Ayr.
South West Scotland is more civilised than Hamilton and Stra’ven, well I would say that though. I think we have a similar attitude to folk from Northern England, down to earth, no bullshit. Although we also have our fair share of Neds, or Chavs, or whatever you would like to call the wee ******.
I wouldn’t have been able to reach the porn in Menzies when I was twelve…or now come to think of it…too titchy
I think nowadays you’d have to procure your porn from W.H.Smiths, as all the John Menzies seem to have disappeared 🙁

Don’t do it Mosh, my folks emigrated there 9 years ago and then my sister followed last year, my brother and sister in law go next year, trust me you do not want to be there!

Mind you they are a fair way up and whilst it is pretty, it’s too god damn far.

I agree on the Ayr stuff though, nice place.

Findo and I were contemplating moving up there but now all the family have gone up there, it suddenly holds no appeal!

Hey Mosh, did you see that one manufacturer is putting health warning on beer? That’s how it started with tabs!

Are you at the match on Sunday? What do you reckon?

Me, I’m practicing my gracious in defeat blog!

Caz

I agree with that too, most of them are selfish. Thats why I dont smoke in packed pubs…I’ll do it it its just me and my friends but I’ll ask before hand and i dont smoke in clubs as you cant just go and get some air like you can in a pub. Im down to 3 a day, some days less *looks proud* But I used to be an inconsiderate smoker :s but health is a wonderful thing.

But to be honest I think its a matter of when not if England gets a smoking ban too, I doubt it will be long after Scotland and thats put in place in 2006

Chris Parr

I think anyone who smokes around their kids should be sent down for child abuse. Simple as that!

Mosh

I will be at the match, but only as I have a season ticket and nobody to pass it on to. I’m not bothered about the drubbing I fear we’ll receive, just that it’s 6-7 hours out of my day when I should be hammering at this coursework!

I do think it’ll be either very close with a Man U win, or we’ll get shat on. We’ve got a tired squad, Man U have rested theirs especially Horseface. It’s also very apparent that we can get caught on the break far too easily and I think that’s where the rest and extra pace may side with Fergie’s side.

Yes, I’d like to win. Yes, on recent form I think we can give the Red-Faced-One a run for his money, but ultimately I’ll be happy with a point.

Mosh

I’m just pissed off with the non-smoking pro-smokers. What a bizarre bunch. “People should have the right to smoke if they want”.

Yeah, fine. I should have the right to clean ******* air if I want. The air *is* clean, they pollute it. They are taking away *my* right. I only ask that they **** off and pollute their own air instead of public air.

Of course, this does mean that they’ll just sit at home and smoke more in front of their kids. If there’s one thing I’m convinced of with hardened smokers, it’s that they’re selfish ********.

Mosh

I’m thinking somewhere *just* over the border, but near a nice pub and a 24-hour shop of some description. Close enough that I can get to home games easily.

I’ll wait and see if this “non-pollution” thing goes through first, though. Don’t want to go expecting miracles and not getting them.

Mosh,

I too wish that England could be leaders and not followers in these matters. Like when Maggie T forced the Poll Tax on us a year before everywhere else, just using us as guinea pigs. And people wonder why we hated her?

Anyway, you wouldn’t want to jump on the bandwagon and move up here. The place is crawling with the English. They are everywhere.

Just what exactly is wrong with living in England?

Mosh

Smiths bought them, I think. Last time I popped up, the Menzies had indeed turned into a Smiths. With the usual drop in pornographic variety that entails.

Well, I had to look. For old times’ sake. I could even reach it myself now, rather than relying on the one tall kid in my class who happened to be a klepto.

Mosh

There’s nothing “wrong” as such. I just wish I could pop into Asda on a Sunday evening when I’ve been away for the weekend. Surely some stupid bloody law shouldn’t stop me from doing something like that?

Hardly going to bring society to its knees if I buy 4 pints of milk and some apples at 8:30 on a Sunday night, is it?

As for smokers and children, I made the point on a very early blog post that I don’t get it. If you were to knowingly drop arsenic into your kids food each day, making them sicker and sicker and *possibly* killing them you’d get (deservedly) pilloried and banged up.

Yet, it’s perfectly legal to breathe carcinogenic smoke full of **** knows what other chemicals in their faces and potentially cause them any one of a score of illnesses and diseases. Where’s the sense?

Caz

You dont want to do that, you want to stay in Bradford, its great :s But seriously I hope they ban smoking and I smoke but I have started to try not to in public places, its not that hard. So for the sake of peoples health, bring it on!

sharon

You’ll expect this from me.. but I told you it was better up there! 😛
