OK, the world is about to end. Tropic Thunder is something I never thought would exist – a Ben Stiller film that’s actually so funny I almost pissed myself. OK, to be fair Dodgeball was damn funny as well but – like Tropic Thunder – it was an ensemble cast with Stiller dampened down by some actually non-annoying actors. Stiller’s character here, though, isn’t as wacky as abortions like Zoolander (how the hell could anyone enjoy that film?).
Plot-in-a-nutshell: Five pretentious actors making a war film that’s behind schedule are causing their director nightmares. So he decides to dump them in the jungle and film it guerilla style. Only things go wrong – well where would the fun be if it didn’t?
The sheer volume of name actors who make an appearance is something I’ve not seen since everyone tried to jump on the Austin Powers bandwagon. Part of the fun is playing “spot the cameo”. The version I saw also had a few fake trailers at the start for films featuring the “actors” in the movie. Wait till you figure out who a heavily made-up Tom Cruise is playing. Your clue is he swears more than anyone else in the film.
Lots of swearing, some genuinely good (over)acting, a few little pokes are real celebrities, huge explosions and even a snippet from an old Star Trek episode. Good entertainment.

very entertaining – If you get the chance get the DVD version and listen to the cast commentary – very funny.

I’ll see if I can borrow a copy somewhere. Not like I’m going to be buying DVDs on my travels!
