Déja vu

Support a football team? Had your manager walk out over complaints that the big cheeses were messing with his transfer deals? Your sponsor’s gone bust?

Must be Newcastle, yes?

Erm, no. It’s West Ham United joining the club as their sponsor, XL Leisure Group, has just filed for administration almost a year to the day that Northern Rock kind of admitted their financial future wasn’t looking too rosey. At least they’ve just signed up a half-decent manager (possibly) in Gianfranco Zola. I always liked his football, good luck to them and him in his managerial position.

I notice, though, that the newspapers and so forth aren’t ripping the piss out of them for all this. Is this because their fans didn’t go as mental when Curbishley walked? Or because they’re another London team so less of a target? Or because Andy “******* ****” Grey doesn’t have an axe to grind with them for no readily apparent reason?

Review: Deception

Ewan McGregor at the Stormbreaker London premiere.

Saw this in Kuala Lumpur today, so mildly censored as ever. A bit strange as quite a few “****”s were left in while others were dubbed. Also at least one really obvious cut around 1/2 way through. Silly censors.

Anyhoo, it’s a half-decent thriller with about four changes in pace. Ewan McGregor plays a geeky accountant and Hugh Jackman‘s a chartismatic ladies’ man who takes him under his wing and introduces him to an exclusive sex club. Which I would like membership of, please, if anyone’s listening.

Of course, there are ulterior motives involved and soon enough McGregor finds himself in trouble with a sword hanging over his head. Oh, there’s some chick in the film as well but I have no idea who she is.

The plot unwinds quite well, and at a reasonable pace. I also quite liked the way certain clues were given at just the right time. I managed to put things together around the same time as the central characters, which held my interest.

The ending, however, is a bit weak. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll word this carefully! The violent part has been done a million times in other films, so came as no surprise. The police officer’s discovery right at the close created a new thread instead of tying one up. And the suitcases… why leave them?

But I enjoyed it. A clever premise even if the whole thing degenerates into play-by-numbers towards the end.

Response from NUFC

English football (soccer) manager :en:Kevin Keegan

I was pleasantly surprised to get the following reply from Sue at Newcastle United following the email I sent the other day. In fairness, my original message was rather terse (and deservedly so regarding the matters that have gone on at the club recently) so I’m glad to hear back from them. And to top it all, a promise to pass messages on to Kevin Keegan, too.

Dear Iain

I have just received your email from our Customer Services department …………….they are currently inundated with correspondence hence delay.

If you would like to send any messages to Kevin you can send it to this address and I will forward on your behalf.

Kind regards

Sue

At least it’s good to see that other people at the club are doing their jobs well. It’s just the upper echelons who need a severe kicking.

Happy 1000th Birthday!

1000

To me! Well, to this blog. This is post number 1000, which I find hard to believe but WordPress is listing the other 999 so… wow. You should now all send me birthday presents and stuff and things. The more valuable the better.

So somehow I’ve managed to post 1000 items about **** knows what. I’m glad WordPress doesn’t count how much time I’ve wasted on this crap. The sad thing is, I’m quite happy to go on for another 1000. Large bribes will not work, but by all means send me the cash anyway.

I now really hope that CERN experiment didn’t **** everything up. It’d be a pisser to post this and then have the world end. People might think it’s my fault.

If you can read this…

Large Hadron Collider Opens Black Hole

… then the LHC project at CERN was a success. Or at least it didn’t create a whopping big black hole where Geneva used to be and start sucking the entire earth in on itself. This, on the whole, is a good thing. Frankly, I can’t believe the doomsayers all reckoning we’ll die as a result of a few scientists banging what are essentially very tiny bricks together.

One comment on the YouTube video I have posted up, made me giggle:

hey **** you. Why would you want to kill us!!. Cant you just leave earth alone.its true we only have 50 months to live after that.which is in 2012 some where near november the profecy

What a ******* nut-job. And he/she can’t even spell. Frankly, that’s more scary than particles being whacked together. That the humanity that will/did survive is so damn stupid.

It’s also amusing that I’m posting this in advance on a timer so it self-publishes the day after in case I’m dead. Using technology that was first created in the same institution as the one which is potentially going to kill us all. Messing with physics does stuff like that.

Update: seems they won’t actually be destroying anything for a few months. False alarm!
